Witnessing my son become a man.

Last night was senior night at KU in the men’s basketball program. It was so exciting walking out to mid court with Landen and his dad. I could not believe how exhilarating it was to stand there and listen to everyone cheer! If that’s not motivation for this team, I don’t know what is. It was something I had never experienced before. Landen pulled me close with his long arm wrapped around my shoulder and it was the best feeling in the world to stand next to him at that moment!  Then, after the game, listening to him give his speech and share his faith along with his desire and determination to come back into Allen Fieldhouse to celebrate a national championship win…. I couldn’t be more proud and grateful for the journey he is on and the opportunity I have had to be a witness to his amazing steps into manhood!

People keep asking me if I cried, but there was no way I could have. My smile was so big that my cheeks were blocking my tear ducts. I felt so happy and proud that I could not stop smiling and laughing. I remember looking up at Landen while we stood there and asking him if this is what it feels like every time he walked onto the court. He said yes, the feeling is amazing. As I walked back to my seat, everyone along the front row and along the stat table stopped me to tell me how much they have enjoyed watching my son play, and mature, and share his journey with them. What a magnificent feeling!  The best part of that walk was stopping to reminisce, with Wayne Semien, on the first time we spoke (during Landen’s official visit) and what a man he has seen Landen become. I had prayed for a mentor in Landen’s life when he went off to college, and at that moment, I got to thank Wayne for mentoring my son. What a privilege to see all of you and to share this amazing journey with you! Thank you all for showing me your love and kindness!

Before the game, Brian Hanni asked me to  record a statement on how it felt to be his proud mother in this exciting time of his life. You can listen to the attached audio below.  I look forward to the rest of this journey and sharing it with all of you! Stay tuned….
