ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Some people wait their whole life to meet their favorite athlete…….I raised mine.

I am blessed to be the mother of a highly competitive D1 athlete who insisted her child try all sports before dedicating himself to the year-round commitment of basketball.

His father and I (both former athletes) did our best to guide our son through the ups and downs of competitive athletics.  We tried to raise a son of good character and academic achievement, while navigating AAU sports, player rankings, the NCAA recruitment process, choosing a coach, choosing an agent, and preparing for the future of life after competitive sports. After all that, I sent my son out into the world of top-ranked college athletics, praying for good mentors, good coaches, good teachers, and good teammates.  Then I became a college basketball mom and fan!

As a Sideline Sports Mom, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many parents of athletes. I’ve learned many lessons and gained valuable information that I want to share with you.

While I write a guidebook for parents raising athletes, I invite you to ask questions and share experiences on my website and facebook page.

Hope to hear from you soon!

  1. Shelley, I graduated from KU in 1980 with a business degree. I am a passionate KU sports and academic supporter, but having run a business for most of the last 30 years, I also enjoy developing young people and watching them grow in our company. I commend your approach to raising Landen and supporting him through his career at KU. I have loved reading your stories and notes and learning about the life of an athlete’s mom. I know you must be proud of Landen and how he has played the game and represented the University.
To you and Richard, Well done! I look forward to seeing what he can accomplish in his life.
